October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and an ideal time to call attention to the importance of early screening to help detect breast cancer. Early detection is associated with higher long-term survival rates.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among American Indian and Alaska Native women.

This interactive Summit provides attendees the opportunity to learn about current IHS Tribal Consultation topics, with a focus on the IHS budget and a preview of the upcoming FY2016 IHS budget formulation process. The online webinar format will also provide opportunities for sharing of visual information, questions, comments and discussion among participants.

Did you know that breastfeeding can significantly reduce the risk of childhood obesity, diabetes, allergies and asthma, and many types of infections such as upper respiratory, gastrointestinal, and necrotizing enterocolitis? The IHS aims to certify all IHS obstetric facilities as Baby-Friendly by the end of 2014. This initiative promotes breastfeeding to reduce the risk that children will develop obesity and diabetes in the future. Baby-Friendly hospitals offer new mothers the information, confidence, and skills they need to initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.
