Activity: Architectural

Keyword: Smoking Area

CSO No.:N/A

Background:
Designated smoking areas become a problem if they are not included in the early planning. They end up being set up as an after thought in a public area, resulting in less than ideal conditions both for the smoker and non-smoker. At the ANMC a smoking area was set up under a canopy between the outpatient and emergency entrance, which is also used by the general public.

Lessons Learned:
Recognize the need to plan for designated smoking areas early in the planning/design process and a better solution will result.

Recommended Action:
Require that designated smoking areas be considered during the planning/design stages of all healthcare facilities.
