Activity: Architectural

Keyword: Skylights/Atrium

Background:
A portion of the main entrance lobby features a two-story atrium with substantial glazing at the roof. During periods of extended sunny days there is substantial heat in the area surrounding the atrium making it uncomfortably warm for persons in the waiting area.

Lessons Learned:
Unusual architectural features need careful evaluation and coordination with themechanical designers. Features such as this must be carefully studied in the design stage to avoid problems later during operation.

Recommended Action:
Avoid unusual design features that may be costly to operate (maintenance or energy) unless they are coordinated with the design team and life-cycle costs evaluated.
