Activity: Structural

Keyword: Wood Trusses

CSO No.:06130

Background:
Bolted wood trusses were used as roof supports for the Warm Springs facility. Settlement and some lateral movement related to the trusses was noted in some window wall and interior finished areas.

Lessons Learned:
The wood in large bolted trusses has a tendency to shrink with age as it driesout and the bolted connections will show minor displacement.

Recommended Action:
During the first several years a preventive maintenance plan of periodic inspection and tightening of the bolted connections should be adopted. If excessive vertical displacement is noted the truss can be jacked in place before tightening the bolted connections.
