Activity: Mechanical Keyword: Elevators Background: Review of service contracts on elevators revealed that 7 elevators (6 at two hospitals and 1 at a health center) had never been inspected by a qualified elevator inspector as
required by the pertinent code (ASME A17.1). Lessons Learned: Having a preventive maintenance service contract for an elevator does not mean that all tasks needed to make an elevator safe and maximize it's useful economic life are being accomplished. We found many components of our elevators were not being properly maintained in accordance with the code and several items urgently needed repair. Recommended Action: Ensure that elevators are inspected by a qualified elevator inspector at the frequency (annually for hydraulic elevators) required by the applicable code. This will ensure that the fox is not guarding the henhouse. Location: Lawton, OK, Pawnee, OK, Tahlequah, OK Program: OKC Area Office/Facility Management Branch Date: 08/24/2001
