Activity: Electrical

Keyword: Main Entrance Orientation

Background:
The main public entrance at the Yakima Health Center faces west and unfortunatelyaligns with the prevailing winds. There were no physical barriers initially installed and the waiting area was uncomfortable in certain seasons with excess winds and dust.

Lessons Learned:
Main public entrances must be designed considering many factors. If facing the prevailing winds cannot be avoided for cultural or other reasons proper safeguards must be designed to avoid compromising important space such as the public waiting area.

Recommended Action:
Design main public entrance to IHS Hospitals with conditioned vestibules to provide weather protection and a reasonable transition to the interior of the hospital.

Yakima Health Center - Toppenish, WA
