Activity: O & M

Keyword: Infectious Waste Disinfection

CSO No.:N/A – Planning Criteria

Background:
In lieu of storing and dealing with an infectious waste contract, the ANMC has a "Sani-Pak" sterilizing unit that reduces infectious wastes to standard wastes through steam disinfection.

Lessons Learned:
This eliminates storage of infectious wastes and allows one contractor to dispose of all the hospital solid wastes. There are savings realized in time, costs and facilities requirements.

Recommended Action:
The infectious wastes should be studied and this alternative system studied especially at remote IHS health care facilities.

Location:
ANMC – Anchorage, AK

Program: IHSAA/ANMC

Date: 09/19/2002
