SAVOONGA HEAD START FACILITY

The IHS has entered into an interagency agreement with the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) to provide technical assistance and A/E services to assist the Head Start program with the evaluation of proposed sites, the review of designs for the construction of new or major renovation facilities, and to help ensure facilities are ready for occupancy. Technical assistance includes on-site visits during the planning, design, construction, and start up phases.

Savoonga is a village located on the northern coast of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, in the Bering Sea, approximately 164 miles west of Nome. The population of the village is approximately 710 persons. The economy is largely subsistence hunting. The new Head Start facility is a 4,715 square foot building with two class rooms, a gross motor play area, staff offices, and kitchen. The Project Budget is $2,400,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in June of 2006 and the building is scheduled to be ready for occupancy in November of 2006.
