Division of Health Professions Support
The IHS Division of Health Professions Support (DHPS) is responsible for recruiting and retaining health professionals to serve within Indian health care facilities. DHPS advises and supports the IHS Director on policy, budget formulation and resource allocation regarding the operation and management of IHS, Tribal and Urban Indian health programs. In working to meet the IHS mission – To raise the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level – DHPS administers scholarships, externships, loan repayment, recruitment, grants and other career support services to promote health care professionals to work within Indian communities. In addition to the IHS Loan Repayment Program, the IHS Scholarship Program and the IHS Extern Program, DHPS also offers the IHS Ambassador Program in which college faculty and residency and extern program coordinators volunteer to assist in identifying health profession candidates whom they deem are a good match for Indian health programs.
