Summary:

This course is a continuation of the “Basic Expanded Functions” course, which is a prerequisite. All five cavity classifications/preparations will be covered in lecture and laboratory exercises, including amalgam and composite restorations. Lectures will review and update course participants on dental restorative materials including a discussion of bonding agents. Laboratory exercises will be performed on typodonts beginning with conservative preparations and working up to and including cusp-protected amalgam and incisal angle composite resin restorations. Also, participants will be introduced to the basics of occlusion. The course will require that the participant perform 5 cusp-protecting amalgams [CPAs] and 5 Class IV composite restorations back in their clinical setting before receiving her/his certificate.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the basic concepts of occlusion as they apply to restorative dentistry.
2. Place and finish complex Class II amalgam restorations and composite restorations involving the incisal angle.
3. Discuss the current state-of-the-art dentinal bonding agents.
4. Discriminate between acceptable and unacceptable restorations.

Rickey Thompson — After graduation from dental school in 1989, worked in the private sector for a year before joining the U.S Air Force. Transferred to the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in 1993. PHS assignments have included Fort Peck Service Unit, Southern Colorado Service Unit, and Shiprock Service Units. Certificate from the Basic Expanded Functions course GS-5 or eviqualent or successful completion of the Esthetic Restorative course.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
