Summary:

The purpose of this one-day conference is to provide continuing education for dental providers who practice in rural areas and community health center dental clinics.

Learning Objectives:

David Ettinger Session Summary & Learning Objectives:
In this session, you will learn about extractions from routine to impactions including surgical complications, how to best manage infections, evaluation and treatment including medical management and surgical management, and dentoalveolar injuries from proper diagnosis to treatment.
Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to:
1. List 3 common complications of extractions and identify management strategies.
2. Recognize severity of infections and summarize how to manage.
3. Recognize different dentoalveolar injuries and list treatment strategies.

R. Scott Boots Session Summary & Learning Objectives:
Health care providers are often at risk for burnout. This session will teach the health care provider to set healthy boundaries and respond to stress in healthy ways so he/she can better care for others.
Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to:
1. Distinguish dynamics of providing care.
2. Articulate how each person experiences stress uniquely.
3. Identify symptoms of compassion fatigue.
4. Utilize practical, proven solutions and exercises for stress reduction.
5. Set healthy goals and create a future response plan for personal/professional stress.

Irene Hilton Session Summary & Learning Objectives:
Two phrases usually guaranteed to produce uncertainty in most dentists are “pregnant women” and “dental care”. While data show that pregnant women in all insurance categories receive dental care less than other individuals, the research evidence base as well as common sense reveal many reasons why the perinatal period is an optimum time to provide necessary dental care. This presentation will review the current research on how a women’s oral health may affect her children, and review current clinical guidelines for providing appropriate preventive and restorative treatment of pregnant women.
Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to:
1. Explain effect of maternal oral health on families.
2. Describe why pregnancy provides opportunity to provide oral health interventions for women.
3. Apply the elements of clinical prevention and treatment guidelines for pregnant women.
4. Describe how to develop medical-dental integration in the health care setting that improves perinatal health.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
