Summary:

This course is a discussion-based literature review related to the prevention and management of carious lesions in the primary and mixed dentition. Each session will include a discussion on a series of articles focusing on a specific topic. The topics to be reviewed are: comparison of chemotherapeutic prevention modalities; excavation techniques; and restorative materials. Prior to each session a central question will be asked, and pertinent journal articles will be made available.
Please note: There is no expectation for participants to make a formal presentation on any article. In addition, the review of the articles will be kept in a clinically relevant context. I suspect the phrase; “That is nice but…” may occur throughout the discussion sessions. The number of articles will vary, based on the number of participants and the complexity of the issue.
Week 1 - Non-fluoride and fluoride preventive agents: What is the expected outcome? – Is the evidence in support of glass ionomer sealants sufficient?
Week 2 – How clean must a lesion become before a restoration is placed?
Week 3 – Is the primary tooth pulpotomy out of date?
Week 4 – Is a stainless steel crown [SSC] really the most effective restoration for primary teeth?

Week Two How clean must the lesion be before a restoration is placed?
• Guideline on pediatric restorative dentistry. [AAPD 2012]
• Rational for the partial removal of carious tissue in primary teeth [Riberio 2012]

• Treatment of Deep carious lesion by complete or partial removal: a critical review [Thompson 2008]
• Should Deciduous teeth be Restored? Reflections of a Cariologist [Kidd 2012]
