SUSTAINABILITY WEBINAR - HUMAN PHARMACEUTICALS IN THE ENVIRONMENT
ID: 1643
Category: -
Dates: 7/30/14-7/30/14
Location: On-Line 1 - 2 pm EDT
Description: The FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research [CDER] manages an environmental assessment [EA] program that [1] involves the review of EAs in drug applications and [2] is increasingly responding to a proliferation of scientific data and public interest regarding pharmaceuticals in the environment. CDER’s mandate for drug approval and other actions requires consideration of environmental impacts and mitigations. CDER has embraced a leadership position as an environmental steward and now is working collaboratively to identify and ultimately develop and support sustainable opportunities. This presentation will address opportunities such as: - Pharmaceutical-related pollution prevention [e.g., drug take-back and disposal programs] - Source reduction [e.g., “green pharma”, personalized medicine] - Environmental compliance [e.g., updated NEPA requirements] - Outreach and communications [e.g., drug package labeling, publications, websites] - Research [e.g., tools for predicting pharmaceutical aquatic toxicity] Mr. Laurenson will detail how these low-cost environmental stewardship efforts translate into benefits such as reductions in risks to aquatic and terrestrial species and humans. Additionally, this presentation will highlight CDERs commitment to engaging in activities aimed at better understanding risks of pharmaceuticals in the environment and providing a positive example for other regulatory agencies and institutions in the U.S. and internationally.
Learning Outcomes: The audience will come away with a better understanding of their own role regarding pharmaceuticals in the environment, the environmental and human health risks, and the various risk management practices available to mitigate risk.
