Professional Opportunities
Serving women in the rural communities throughout the Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service region is a uniquely challenging and rewarding opportunity. As a part of the Mobile Women's Health Unit staff you will be working with state-of-the-art equipment in small towns and remote areas, with women who have great need for regular preventive care.
The Mobile Women's Health Unit will be staffed by a Nurse Practitioner, Radiology Technician, Registered Nurse, and a Biomedical Engineering Technician who will drive the unit. In addition to the professional requirements for each position, experience working with American Indians in rural communities would be helpful. The Mobile Unit will provide pap exams, breast exams, digital mammograms, digital ultrasound, bone density testing, various blood screenings, health assessments, and health education on a variety of women's health topics that include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and self-breast exams.
Your on-duty time will consist of four 10 hour days for 41-45 weeks out of the year. The workweek consists of alternating days from Monday-Thursday week one and Tuesday-Friday week two. The 41-45 week schedule takes into consideration Federal holidays and regular maintenance of the unit. During your time on, depending on workload, you will spend four days on each reservation, and then travel to the next location. You should know that you will be working with women who may not have access to regular medical care, and may have some anxiety about the tests and procedures you will be doing during their visit. Educating these women about the benefits of preventive women's screenings while offering compassionate care will encourage them to repeat their visit the next time you are in their community, and to encourage their family and friends to do the same.
