Located on the Eastern edge of the Black Hills of South Dakota, Rapid City is home to Sioux San hospital, the Rapid City Service Unit Indian Health Service.  The current hospital was constructed in 1938, and operated as a tuberculosis sanitorium under the auspices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs until 1955, when the facility was transferred to the authority of the U.S. PHS.  The area served by Sioux San hospital includes all of Pennington County, South Dakota.

Sioux San hospital's inpatient service includes a 19-bed acute care general medical unit, a 4-bed pediatric unit, and a 9-bed mental health unit.  In addition to the permanent medical staff, several private physicians representing major medical specialties serve as consultants to the hospital staff on a contract basis.

The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospitals Organization (JACHO) accredits the hospital and clinic system.
