Diabetes Program Logo

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that results in either a deficiency of insulin or a decreased ability of the body to use insulin. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. Insulin is needed to process sugars in food for energy. The hallmark sign of diabetes mellitus is high blood sugar. Diabetes increases the risk of heart attack and stroke by 2 to 4 times. It is the leading cause of new blindness, end stage renal disease, and amputations.
