The Information Technology department of the Rapid City Service Unit provides technical support for the facility's Automated Data Processing (ADP) related and telecommunications equipment. The Information Technology department is the first line of support for computer and telecommunications needs.
Both hardware and software support is available for a variety of system configurations. These configurations include 4 system servers that are used for inter-office/agency communications (e-mail), an internal Web site application (Maintenance work orders) and the primary hospital
application for the patient database. In addition, the Information Technology department provides support for the Local Area Network (LAN) that includes approximately 120 desktop systems running the Microsoft Office Suite of applications. Besides the Local Area Network, the facility is linked to the
Indian Health Service's Wide Area Network (WAN) using a high-speed connection to provide access to other IHS facilities and external resources, such as the MicroMedix database and various research libraries located around the world. Some of the Department's other responsibilities
include:
- physical security concerns of Sioux San Hospital's computer systems.
- installation and troubleshooting of both hardware and primary software applications being used by each desktop system.
- installation/configuration of LAN cabling and telephone maintenance.
- database administration.
- training on a variety of applications.
- adhoc reporting.
The Information Technology Department is also responsible for Information Systems Security and provides training in this area on an annual basis. The Rapid City Service Unit Information Technology department is provided with additional technical resources through the Aberdeen Area Office's Information Technology department staff for both hardware and software support.
