Regional Behavioral Health Program
(605) 355 - 2274
(605) 355 - 2510

The Regional Behavioral Health Program at Sioux San Hospital, established by a mandate from Congress, provides outpatient services to the Rapid City area and intermediate level inpatient care to patients referred from the Aberdeen Area as well as the Bemidji and Billings Areas of the Indian Health Service.   The level of care offered (an open, voluntary unit) supplements the limited outpatient care available at most Indian Health Service Units.  Because of the complicated treatment considerations associated with involuntary, violent, or long-term chronically mentally ill patients we will assist with placement of these individuals in other appropriate inpatient settings in the area.  Patients are expected to be detoxed before admission in order to maximize their therapeutic benefit from treatment.  Follow-up outpatient aftercare is coordinated with the referral source.

The primary goal is to improve the region's ability to manage patients with psychiatric and related disorders.  This capacity building function is carried out in several ways. One is through psychiatric consultation at the regional level focusing on diagnostic evaluations, patient care, and management.  Other intervention strategies are directed toward community education and technical assistance with the focus being the development of new and innovative programs to treat the mentally ill. The overall focus is the establishment of a comprehensive continuum of care for inpatients and outpatients.

Treatment Philiosophy

Our treatment philosophy is to blend state of the art medication and therapeutic modalities with an emphasis on American Indian culture.Image of a brain in a silhouette of a head

Culturally Sensitive Approach

The holistic values of traditional American Indian culture form the basis for a biopsychosocial and spiritual approach to assessment and treatment of patients. This approach balances the emotional, mental, physical, and social aspects of the individual upon a spiritual foundation.

Dual Diagnosis

Our multidisciplinary team consisting of highly trained professionals including psychiatrists, a psychologist, social workers, nurse practitioners, a chemical dependency counselor, a recreational therapist, and psychiatric nurses evaluates all patients.   Dually diagnosed patients admitted to the psychiatric unit are required to attend local AA meetings and participate in scheduled chemical dependency and dual diagnosis therapy groups.
