History was made on Thursday, May 6, 2004, when the first “Nursing Service Open House” in the
Phoenix Area was held. The event was hosted by Phoenix Indian Medical Center and made
possible through the support of Headquarters’ Nursing, Phoenix Area Human Resources
Department and the Phoenix Indian Medical Center Executive Leadership Team.
Through poster presentations, all participating Nursing departments and Service Units
highlighted their scope of services, nursing activities and nursing events. Nursing Leaders
were able to converse with nurses visiting from the outside during the Open House about
nursing opportunities. The featured departments included the following: Medical, Surgical,
Integrated Surgical Services, Intensive Care Unit, Procedure Room, Emergency Department,
Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Ambulatory Care, and the Float Pool. Additionally, Nurse Leaders
from the Hopi Health Care Center and the Whiteriver Service Unit represented their facilities.
The Human Resource and Commissioned Corp staffs were on-hand to assist with any inquiries as
well. There were 25 registered nurses and 11 other healthcare workers from the private
sector that responded to the Open House marketing efforts.
In conjunction with the recruiting efforts, the event included activities to observe National
Nurse’s Day and to show appreciation to the nursing staff for all their hard work and
contributions to the patients we serve. Frequent raffle drawings were held. Refreshments
were provided to all who attended. More than 282 internal nursing staff participated in the
Open House. It was very evident that the nursing staff worked very hard and put great effort
into making the event a success. Overall, the event proved successful for demonstrating our
appreciation to our dedicated nursing staff and marketing nursing opportunities within the
Phoenix Area. Efforts such as this will certainly assistance in filling the vacant positions.
