From the Phoenix Area IHS Director's memo dated 1/08/2009:
I am pleased to announce the selection of Mrs. Michelle Martinez as the Chief Executive Officer of the
Whiteriver Service Unit effective Monday, January 5, 2009.
Mrs. Martinez is a family nurse practitioner who has worked at both the Whiteriver Hospital and the Cibecue Health Center
since July of 1999. She received her BSN degree from the Arizona State University and followed that with a concurrent MSN degree
in Community Health Nursing and Family Nurse Practice (FNP). After beginning her Indian Health Service career at the Phoenix
Indian Medical Center, she worked as a nurse practitioner in the Cherokee Indian Hospital, Cherokee, NC, before transferring to
Whiteriver. She is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Public Health and should be awarded her degree within the next
year.
Mrs. Martinez has shown excellent progress in developing her leadership skills. In 2005, she attended the IHS Executive
Leadership Development Program (ELDP) as the Whiteriver Service Unit’s chosen participant. She is certified by the American
Academy of Nurse Practitioners and is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau, the national nursing honor society. Over her 9 years at
Whiteriver, she has had increasing leadership responsibilities and has directed both the women’s health program and the general
surgery clinic program. For the past year, she has served as the Acting CEO of the Whiteriver Service Unit.
Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Martinez as she assumes this important leadership role. I have the greatest confidence in
her ability to lead the Whiteriver Service Unit in providing quality health care to the people of the White Mountain Apache
Tribe.
