FY 2005 Budget Formulation

Tribal representatives met in April with Phoenix Area staff to assist the Indian Health Service in the preparation of the FY 2005 agency budget. From a projected FY 2004 current budget level of $2,889,662,000, the formulation group set funding priorities and prepared budget documents to increase the current level by 4% and 7%. Ranking highest were: Contract Health Services, Facilities Construction, Alcohol/Substance Abuse Programs, Diabetes, and tribal/IHS pay costs.

In May, Phoenix Area tribal representatives met in a national meeting for consultation to the leadership of the Indian Health Service. Tribal representatives recommended that the Indian Health Service consider increases of 10%, 15% and 20% rather than the directed 4% and 7%.

Indian Health Service is expected to submit the preliminary budget request for FY 2005 to the Department of Health and Human Services in June.
