The Sophie Trettevick PHS Indian Health Center (also known as the Neah Bay Service Unit) primarily serves the ambulatory care needs of the Makah Tribe and is located on the Makah Indian Reservation. The Health Center is staffed with 25 employees including 2 Family Practice Physicians, a Family Nurse Practitioner, 3 RNs, a Medical Technologist, a Registered Pharmacist, a Dentist and back-up professional staff. Services include general medical care, laboratory, X-ray, dental care and other specialty care by tele-medicine.
Originally dedicated in 1971, the clinic just completed some renovations that enhanced efficiency in Medical Records, Pharmacy, the Medical Laboratory and exam rooms. The last major renovation occurred in 1999 when a modular building was added, allowing the dental program to relocate in the building and freeing up space in the main facility for other programs. Total space is 8,000 square feet. The Health Center is open Monday Friday, 8 am – 5pm and closed Holidays.
Located on the Olympic Peninsula and the very Northwestern tip of both the state of Washington and the Continental United States, the Makah Reservation is bounded by the open Pacific Ocean on the West and the Straight of Juan de Fuca to the North (Canada’s Vancouver Island is 17 miles across the Straight). Its waters lie within the boundaries of one of only ten National Marine Sanctuaries. Neah Bay’s most famous neighbor is the Olympic National Park. The Reservation covers more than 27 thousand acres of forests, mountains, wetlands and beaches. The area offers extraordinary opportunities for outdoor recreation including: wildlife photography, fishing, boating, sea kayaking, hiking, bicycling and backpacking. Neah Bay is relatively remote from any hospital and the traditional amenities provided by urban communities.
