Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis

The Chehalis Confederated Tribes come from the Hoquiam, Hooshkal, Humptulips, Klimmin, Nooskhom, Satsop, Wynooche, and Wishkah Tribes. They are a Salishan language group. The Chehalis peoples' economy depended on the trade of fish, clams, oysters and furs. The Chehalis Reservation is located in the southeastern corner of Grays Harbor County bordering Thurston County, southeast of Oakville, Washington. It covers 4,225 acres made up of 24 acres of tribal trust land and 1,763 acres of individual trust land.

Tribal Health and Prevention Programs

  • The Tribes had a user population of 832 in 1998
  • Ambulatory clinic, operated out of a 4,929 SF tribally owned structure built in 1979
  • Alcohol and substance abuse program, TSAPOWUM
  • National Indian Rights Water Project, a cooperative between the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis and the Bureau of Indian Affairs
  • The Tribes participate in a USDA funded program, the Extension Indian Reservation Program, in collaboration with Washington State University
