Squaxin Island Tribe

The Squaxin Island Tribal heritage traditionally includes basketmaking and woodcarving. Our culture and traditions focus on salmon and forestry, which are central to our ceremonies. We are closely linked to the Nisqually people through similar traditions, family ties and traditional language. Our tribe participated in a treaty council with the U.S. government in 1854, along with other southern Puget Sound tribes. We operate under a tribal constitution, and our governing body is the Squaxin Island Tribal Council. The Squaxin Island Reservation occupies most of a small island north of Olympia, Washington.

The Tribe operates a health clinic providing primary care & dental services. User population for 1998 was 725. Services are provided in a tribally owned building, and include:

  • Alcohol and substance abuse program, inpatient treatment facility
  • Additional programs include community health representatives, public health services, health education, nutrition, optometry, dental, emergency medical services, alcoholism treatment, community nursing, home health care, and traditional medicine
