Suquamish Tribe

The Port Madison Indian Reservation is located on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State. Situated on the waterfront across the Puget Sound from Seattle, the reservation is home to the Suquamish people, a fishing tribe whose leader was Chief Seattle, after whom the city took its name.

Our people traditionally lived in an area extending from Point Everett in the north along the eastern shore of Puget Sound to the present site of Seattle. In 1855 the Treaty of Point Elliot was signed, establishing the Port Madison Reservation. The original reservation was approximately 1,300 acres, situated on both sides of Miller's Bay. In 1864 this was expanded to almost 8,000 acres. Currently, only about 2,500 acres of the original 8,000 remain, with approximately 100 acres of tribal land. Our tribal constitution provides for the administrative responsibilities of Tribal government to be handled by the Suquamish Tribal Council.

The Suquamish Tribe does not provide on-site primary care. Instead, we operate a benefits package with private insurers funded by the IHS contract. User population in 1998 was 480. Health programs are coordinated from the Tribal Facility.

Major services include:

  • Primary care outpatient visits
  • Diagnostic & hospital care
  • Mental health
  • Inpatient care
  • Pharmacy services
  • Alcohol and substance abuse program
  • Mental health and community health representative program
