Tahlequah

Situated in the heart of Oklahoma's Green Country, Tahlequah is one of the most scenic and friendliest towns in Oklahoma. Housing ranges from the truly luxurious to the modest, and access to the excellent shopping, cultural entertainment, and urbane dining available in nearby Muskogee, Tulsa and Fayetteville, Arkansas.

A mild climate -- the annual temperature average is 60 degrees -- plus good road and highway accessibility combine with the recreational opportunities to make the entire area a tourists' mecca.

Only five miles away is Lake Tenkiller, one of the area's clearest, most beautiful lakes and a favorite for water skiing and fishing. It is fed by the Illinois River, which is a haven for canoe parties and fly fishermen.

The community of Tahlequah is served by a fine public school system, as well as a few private schools. Northeastern State University, boasts a wide variety of Bachelors and Masters level programs, plus a doctoral in Optometry. Within reasonable driving distances are the Universities of Arkansas and Tulsa, the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, Bacone College and Oral Roberts University.

The presence of the advanced Cherokee culture is celebrated by a living demonstration of tribal history at the Cherokee Heritage Center just south of town. Thousands of tourists come each year to see this and to take in the dramatic stage production recounting the Trail of Tears, performed throughout the summer in an outdoor theater.

All of these features make Tahlequah a truly educational and enjoyable place in which to live and bring up a family!

Visit the Tahlequah City web site.
