The Indian Health Service (IHS) Director's Prevention Initiative is meeting the challenge to develop, implement, and support a structured program that will result in effective health promotion and disease prevention services for AI/AN at the community level, resulting in measurable improvements in the health status of AI/AN in the future. Details on specific elements of the IHS Prevention Initiative are available through the links on this page.
In FY 2009, IHS awarded 11 three-year cooperative agreements to American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) communities; 13 three-year competitive grants were awarded in 2006 and 20 one-year grants were awarded in 2005. The purpose of the grant is to enhance and expand health promotion and chronic disease prevention to reduce health disparities among AI/AN populations. The plan is fully integrated with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Initiative such as Healthy People 2010 and Steps to a HealthierUS.
