PURPOSE:

All references to "Indian Beneficiaries" in the Indian Health Manual will be deleted and "Indians" or "Indian People" as appropriate will be substituted.

Accordingly, Part II "Services to Beneficiaries and Others" should be changed to "Services to Indians and Others" and Chapter 1, Part II, should be changed to Indians.

Henceforth, it is the policy of the Indian Health Service not to use the term "beneficiaries" when referring to Indians or the Indian People.  Appropriate changes should be made in the entire Indian Health Manual as well as in any future correspondence or issuances.
