Transmittal Notice 04-08

TN 04-08
01/14/05

DISCUSSION

This chapter establishes the Indian Health Service (IHS) policy regarding the guidelines for withholding cardiopulmonary resuscitation for certain patients.  The IHS remains committed to the principle of supporting and sustaining life by using the latest life-saving or life-supporting techniques and therapeutic measures, when medically appropriate.  Medically appropriate care at the end of life always should benefit the patient and never merely prolong the dying process.  Full consideration will be granted to patients regarding their wishes to accept or refuse medical interventions.
