The Higher Education Act (HEA) provides a loan consolidation program under both the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) and Direct Loan Program. These programs simplify loan repayment by combining several types of federal education loans that may have different terms and repayment schedules or may have been made by different lenders into one new loan that may potentially have lower interest rates than one or more of the underlying loans.

Item 2 Direct Loan
To apply for a Direct Loan, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), see next link below, or the Renewal FAFSA. Parents must complete a Direct PLUS Loan Application and Promissory Note, which is available from the school's financial aid office.
Item 3 Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Apply for financial aid by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It is available electronically, in English and Spanish.
Item 4 Funding Your Education
An introductory publication for students not yet enrolled in a postsecondary school, provides general information about the U.S. Department of Education's federal student financial aid programs and how to apply for them. It is available electronically, in English and Spanish.
