UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) -Matrix Institute Services Available to Indian Health Services The UCLA ISAP-Matrix team has more than 20 years of experience in providing treatment services, conducting training and collecting research data on the topic of methamphetamine abuse and dependence. The medical and mental health clinicians at UCLA-Matrix have delivered or supervised the delivery of treatment services to over 8000 methamphetamine (MA) users over the past two decades. This team has conducted training on a broad variety of methamphetamine-related topics in 32 states, 6 Canadian Provinces and 8 foreign countries. Audiences have included policy makers, educators, judges, lawyers, criminal justice system professionals and health care professionals of all types and levels of education, including extensive training with mental health and substance abuse personnel. Training and Consultation Services: For Physicians and Medical Staff: * Training in the use of empirically-supported substance abuse screening approaches designed to identify all forms of substance abuse and dependence in primary care medical settings. In addition, training in the appropriate brief interventions and treatment referral strategies is also available. * Training in the identification of MA use; management of MA overdose and withdrawal; treatment of MA psychosis; treatment of commonly encountered MA-related medical and psychiatric disorders. * Telephone video and telephone consultation services for MDs affiliated with IHS on management/treatment related problems by a network of internal medicine, family practice and psychiatric physician staff. * Development of clinical protocols to be used by IHS medical personnel for the treatment of a full range of MA-related medical/psychiatric conditions. For Mental Health and Substance Abuse Service Staff * Training on the proper assessment and treatment planning practices for professionals treating MA users in substance abuse and mental health settings. * Training and ongoing supervision (via teleconference or video-conference) on the use of the most effective forms of treatments for MA abuse and dependence for counseling staff. * Modification of current, empirically-supported MA psychosocial treatment protocols (inpatient, residential care, intensive outpatient settings) for adults and adolescents, to meet the needs of the Native American population. (These protocols are modified with expertise, input, involvement and buy-in from Native American clinicians to promote cultural appropriateness and effectiveness for Native Americans). For Program Evaluation * ISAP experts are among the world leaders in the development, implementation and use of empirically-supported strategies for evaluation of the impact of program innovations and program effectiveness
