Retirement
An attractive retirement system offers Civil Service employees a good reason to stay with the IHS Division of Oral Health for an entire career. The Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) became effective January 1, 1987. FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan which allows employees control over a large portion of their retirement savings. The three components are:
- Social Security Benefits
- Basic Benefit Plan
- Thrift Savings Plan
You pay full Social Security taxes and a small contribution to the Basic Benefit Plan. In addition, your agency puts an amount equal to 1% of your basic pay each pay period into your Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) account. You are able to make tax-deferred contributions to the TSP and a portion is matched by the Government. The three components of FERS work together to give you a strong financial foundation for your retirement years. For more information please visit www.opm.gov.

Life Insurance
Civil Service employees are eligible for the Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program. FEGLI provides group term life insurance which consists of Basic life insurance coverage and three self enrollment options. In most instances, an employee is automatically covered by Basic Life insurance unless the coverage is waived. Once an employee has Basic coverage, they can enroll in optional insurance as well. For more information please visit www.opm.gov/insure/life/index.htm
