- GS Grade = Level of Responsibility
- Step = An employee with zero years of prior federal service shall start at
Step 1.
- Most entry level positions for new dental school graduates are at the GS-11 Step 1 base pay. For dentists with previous experience the pay range is higher.
- Civil Service pay is negotiable. Civil Service pay systems can utilize recruitment bonuses authorized by the Indian Health Care Improvement Act to negotiate a salary. Routinely, the entry level pay for a new graduate dentist in a GS-11 job can be $72,030 to $115K range depending on the site. Remember, these salary figures do not include IHSLRP---Therefore, one that is successful in obtaining an IHSLRP award can receive that compensation in addition to this salary. Dentists that with years of experience will find Civil Service salaries very competitive.
- All civil service pay is taxable income.
