Summary:

This session is part of a regular series of CE courses offered to the staff of the Nashville Area.

This session is designed to assist IHS dental staff to enhance their knowledge of available guidelines for the management of dental fear and anxiety in the pediatric dental patient. An introduction of available oral sedatives with or without the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation sedation will be covered. Participants will also learn the importance of proper diagnosis, treatment and documentation, as well as emergency awareness prior, during and after nitrous oxide/oxygen and oral sedation procedures. This guideline is based on a review of the current dental and medical literature related to nitrous oxide/oxygen and oral sedation in the management of analgesia/anxiolysis in pediatric patients.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
1. Recognize nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation as a safe and effective technique to reduce pain, fear, and anxiety.
2. List the advantages, disadvantages, indications, and contraindications to the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen and conscious sedation in children.
3. Recognize the complications that may arise as a result of nitrous oxide/oxygen and conscious sedation administration.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
