IHS Nursing Opportunities

Employment Systems

The IHS offers competitive salaries and benefits and several different employment options. Recruits may work either for the IHS or for tribes.

Nurses hired by tribally operated facilities - called "direct hires" - are employees of the tribes, and their salaries and benefits vary according to the tribe and site. Nurses at IHS operated facilities are employees of the Federal Government; they can choose to be civil service employees or members of the Commissioned Corps, the uniformed branch of the U.S. Public Health Service.

Commissioned Corps nurses enjoy numerous benefits, such as use of commissary and other base facilities and 30 days annual leave beginning with the first year of service. While Commissioned Corps members do receive some choice in their practice site, they are subject to relocation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a baccalaureate or master's degree in nursing, and meet other criteria. For more information on how to become a commissioned officer please visit the USPHS site.

Nurses in the civil service receive comparable pay and benefits, including overtime, premium pay for work on Sundays and holidays, and paid moving expenses to and between IHS assignments. Civil service employees are assigned grade and salary based on education, experience, and position level.
