Basic Anatomy of a Shoe
Collar - provides ankle support.
Heel Counter - provides lateral support.
Upper or vamp - adjustable with laces, straps, or Velcro.
Toe Box - protective covering for the toes; range of depths available.
Insert - provides cushioning.
Sole - bottom of shoe; provides traction. A rocker sole provides less pressure at the forefoot.
Shank - stiffens the shoe; adds stability.
