Partnering With AADE To Offer A Unique Training Opportunity

The IHS Division of Diabetes (DDTP) has formed a partnership with the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) to offer AADE training programs during 2010.

This training opportunity is being presented for IHS, Tribal and Urban (I/T/U) Indian program employees currently working with people with diabetes mellitus or at risk for diabetes mellitus, who would like to enhance their knowledge and skills in diabetes self-management education (DSME).

The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) is a leading organization dedicated to integrating self-management as a key outcome in the care of people with diabetes and related chronic conditions.

To receive continuing education (CE) credits, all courses require completion of the entire training and post-course evaluations.

This is a limited opportunity on a first-come, first-serve basis for IHS, Tribal and Urban Indian program employees who meet program prerequisites.

The following AADE training programs are available:

  • Core Concepts® Course – Three-day training courses
  • AADE Webinars – 90-minute live programs
  • Webcasts On-Demand – 24/7 learning programs
  • ABCs of Diabetes Education – Online course
  • Facilitating Behavior Change – Online course
  • Reimbursement Essentials for DSME/T: Navigating the Maze – Live 1-day course

Continuing education from AADE includes in-depth discussion of the fundamentals of DSME and can provide you with new tools and techniques. Among other benefits, the courses offer a chance to raise awareness of the needs of specific patient groups such as women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and youth at risk for type 2 diabetes.

Some of the training programs present information on clinical measures for assessing diabetes and risk for diabetes. Other subjects covered by the various courses include:

  • Causes of overweight/obesity and prevention strategies
  • Facilitating behavior changes
  • Multi-disciplinary approaches to diabetes care
  • Basics of becoming a diabetes educator
  • Effective teaching strategies
