Interventions for the General Population of 1–10 Year Olds
SCREENING
- Height and weight
- Blood pressure
- Vision screen (age 3–4 years)
- Hemoglobinopathy screen (birth)
- Phenylalanine level (birth)
- T 4 and/or T S H (birth)
- Lead toxicity (if there is a risk)
COUNSELING
Substance Use
- Effects of Passive Smoking
- Anti-tobacco/drug/alcohol message
Dental Health
- Advice about baby bottle tooth decay
- Fluoride supplements where needed
- Regular visits to dental care provider
- Floss, brush with fluoride toothpaste daily
Diet and Exercise
- Breastfeeding, iron-enriched formula and foods (infants and toddlers)
- Limit fat and cholesterol; maintain caloric balance; emphasize grains, fruits, vegetables (age equal to or greater than 2 years)
- Regular physical activity
IMMUNIZATIONS/ CHEMOPROPHYLAXIS
- Per latest annual C D C recommendations
- Ocular prophylaxis (birth)
Violence/unintentional injury prevention
- *Child abuse/domestic violence
- *Assess for firearms (family and friends)
- *Gang activity
- Child safety car seats (age < 5 years)
- Lap-shoulder belts (age greater than or equal to 5 years)
- Bicycle helmet; avoid bicycling near traffic
- Smoke detector, flame retardant sleepwear
- Hot water heater temperature <120–130 degrees F
- Sun exposure/protective clothing
- Window/stair guards, pool fence
- Safe storage of drugs, toxic substances, firearms, and matches
- Poison control phone number
- CPR training for parents/caretakers
