The Indian Health Care System:

Tribal facilities are operated under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (Public Law 93-638, as amended), Titles I and V. There are 78 Title V compacts, funded through 100 Funding Agreements, totaling approximately $1.4 billion. These compacts represent 332 Tribes − more than half of all the federally recognized Tribes. There are also approximately 232 Tribes and tribal organizations that contract under Title I, with a total funding amount of $625 million. Overall, over half of the IHS budget authority appropriation is administered by Tribes, primarily through Self-Determination contracts or Self-Governance compacts.

There are 34 urban programs, ranging from community health to comprehensive primary health care services. Approximately 600,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives reside in counties served by urban Indian health programs.
