Residential Programs - Youth
Residential treatment is required for youth that cannot be adequately treated in an outpatient setting. Youth that require this level of treatment generally have substance abuse problems that are serious, and interfere with school, family life, or have gotten into trouble with the law. This level of treatment is more intense than group home, or a transitional living center treatment. It generally includes substance abuse assessment, around the clock observation, individual and group substance abuse counseling, 12-step groups, mental health assessment and treatment, family therapy, academic assessment and placement, life-skills training, vocational assessment and planning, and recreational activities. Those run by an Indian health program or tribe generally include a cultural and traditional healing component. Residential treatment generally last three to six months, or more.
There are no residential treatment programs operated by the Indian Health Service, or tribal or urban health centers in California. All youth requiring residential care are referred to outside facilities, which are located both inside and outside California. See the YRTC Network section of the website for more information on how to refer a youth for treatment and the funding available for treatment.
