Drought 2014

Drought 2014
Office of Environmental Health and Engineering (OEHE)

With the release of the emergency drought declaration by the state of California, the Indian Health Service/California

Area Office (IHS/CAO) is concerned that tribal community water systems could be impacted by one of the driest winters on record in California.  Precipitation in January across the Northern Sierra -- a region crucial to statewide water supplies -- was just 20 percent of average.

Division of Sanitation Facilities Construction

The IHS/CAO, OEH&E, has taken a proactive approach to plan for drought conditions and possible impacts to Indian community water systems.  The OEH&E, Division of Sanitation Facilities Construction is:

  • Conducting an inventory of all tribal community water systems to determine drought impacts
  • Identifying systems that are considered at higher risk of drought impacts
  • Communicating with tribal governments and tribal utility operators
  • Offering assistance to develop a drought contingency plan
Division of Environmental Health Services

The OEH&E, Division of Environmental Health Services (DEHS) has prepared and distributed water conservation literature and has taken a special interest in tribal facilities such as head starts, day care centers, senior centers, and food service operations, to ensure minimal impact from the drought.   The DEHS is prepared to provide immediate technical assistance to these facilities in the event their community water supplies are impacted.
