Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH)

Welcome to the RPMS Integrated Behavioral Health System home page.

This site serves as a central repository for the most current information on the existing RPMS behavioral health software and functionally, plans for future development and information about other Agency behavioral health information technology initiatives and activities. "Integrated Behavioral Health" refers to both the integration of behavioral health and primary care, an Agency priority, and an integrated clinical information system to improve patient care and outcomes.

RPMS Behavioral Health System

RPMS Behavioral Health System v4.0

Behavioral Health System is a module of the Resource and Patient Management System designed specifically for documenting and tracking patient care related to behavioral health. The Behavioral Health System v4.0 interface was written using .NET framework tools and utilizes the existing RPMS BMXNet RPC Broker for communication with RPMS. BHS v4.0 includes a graphical user interface to support direct provider entry of behavioral health clinical information.

BHS v4.0 Patch 1 was released May 20, 2011.

What happened to the IHS Patient Chart application?

OIT decommissioned the IHS Patient Chart application April 29, 2011. This means there will be no further development, training or user support for this application. Additionally, the software files will no longer be available. If a facility chooses not to install the new software, BHS v4.0, and continues to run IHS Patient Chart, they will find that it is not compatible with current releases of related RPMS applications and it may not function properly or display patient data correctly. Therefore it is advised that all facilities transition to BHS v4.0 at this time.

When BHS v4.0 is installed on the RPMS server, the Patient Chart security keys are automatically removed and cannot be restored. Users will no longer be able to access Patient Chart. Behavioral Health data that was entered in Patient Chart will be accessible in BHS v4.0 and elsewhere in RPMS.

RPMS Electronic Health Record and Behavioral Health

I am a Behavioral Health provider. Can I use EHR for my records?

Behavioral Health programs in IHS have used the RPMS Behavioral Health System (BHS) for complete electronic documentation of BH visits for a number of years. BHS is available in typical RPMS "roll and scroll", or in a graphical interface version, previously IHS Patient Chart and now, Behavioral Health System, v4.0. The behavioral health database (AMH) is separate from PCC, although the system can be configured to pass BH diagnoses to PCC. This integration of behavioral and medical information supports coordinated care and improved health outcomes.

At EHR sites, many behavioral health providers expressed a desire to document their visits in EHR to take advantage of the improved access to medical information, TIU note templates, and electronic order/prescription entry. Additionally, expanding the use of the EHR to behavioral health providers supports the integration of primary and behavioral health care and contributes to improved patient outcomes. With the behavioral health visit functionality, BH face-to-face patient encounters, telephone calls and chart reviews can be entered into RPMS using the EHR. These visits will populate both the PCC and BHS databases. Business rules have been developed to limit access to BH clinical notes. If desired, behavioral health providers can use a combination of the EHR and BHS to enter data into RPMS and run reports on BH activities

Facilities are reminded that the export process for BHS data is separate from PCC, so submission of BHS visit and other information, including suicide reporting data, to Areas and IHS Headquarters requires regular exports from the Behavioral Health System.
