The Wewoka Dental Clinic recently replaced all operatory equipment and is one of the first IHS clinics to implement the electronic dental record along with digital radiographs. The Wewoka Health Center employs two physicians and one physician assistant who handle nearly 11,000 outpatient visits annually. Another 12,700 visits are managed by support staff. To a population of mostly Seminole Indians, the clinic renders outpatient services in general medicine, prenatal and well-baby care, optometry, dentistry, and counseling for emotional problems. Community health personnel, working closely with medical staff, operate a very active specialty clinic for diabetes with a focus upon education. Within the team concept, a nutritionist provides individual or group counseling to patients that are pregnant, overweight, or diagnosed diabetics. Family screening is also an important part of the approach.
