For new participants who are not current employees of the Indian health system: LRP participants, upon accepting loan repayment funding, agree to an initial two-year
service commitment to be fulfilled at the priority site and in the position listed on their application. The service commitment for a non-Indian health system
employee begins on the participant's first day of work at the assigned site. For example, if an LRP contract is signed in May but the participant does not begin
employment until August, the service commitment begins on the first day of employment in August.
For new participants who are currently employed in the Indian health system: The service commitment for a current Indian health system employee begins on the date
his or her LRP contract is signed. For example, if a new LRP participant has been employed at an Indian health program facility for the past 18 months, the service commitment begins
on the date the Secretary's delegate signed the LRP contract and will not be retroactive to the participant's first day of employment.
Contract extensions: Beginning up to nine months prior to completion of their initial two-year commitment, LRP participants can apply to extend their contract
at the same site on a year-to-year basis until all qualifying loans are paid. Visit the
Extending Participation page for more information about LRP contract extensions.
Breach of contract: Participants who are terminated or resign from their positions, or who transfer sites or change positions without prior approval from the LRP
office, will be in breach of contract and placed in default. Visit the Termination and Breach of Contract
page for more information.
