For new recipients who are not current employees of the Indian health system: LRP recipients, upon accepting loan repayment funding, agree to an initial two-year
service obligation to be fulfilled at the priority site and in the position listed on their application. The service obligation for a non-Indian health system
employee begins on the recipient's first day of work at the assigned site. For example, if an LRP contract is signed in May but the recipient does not begin
employment until August, the service obligation begins on the first day of employment in August.
For new recipients who are currently employed in the Indian health system: The service obligation for a current Indian health system employee begins on the date
his LRP contract is signed. For example, if a new LRP recipient has been employed at an Indian health program facility for the past 18 months, the service
obligation begins on the date the LRP contract was signed by the Secretary's delegate and will not be retroactive to his first day of employment.
Contract extensions: Beginning up to nine months prior to completion of their initial two-year obligation, LRP recipients can apply to extend their contract at
the same site or another priority site on a year-to-year basis until all qualifying loans are paid. Visit the
Extending Participation page for more information about LRP contract extensions.
Breach of contract: Recipients who are terminated or resign from their positions, or who transfer sites or change positions without prior approval from the LRP
office, will be in breach of contract and placed in default. Visit the Termination and Breach of Contract
page for more information.
