The following checklist provides a basic outline of materials you'll need and actions you'll take to apply for a medical student or resident elective opportunity.

- Contact the IHS site to determine the availability of an Assigned Clinical Preceptor
- Contact the IHS site to determine the housing availability
- The educational institution must furnish:
- A letter of certification that the student/resident is in good standing
- Proof of the student's resident's malpractice coverage
- Documentation of the resident's immunization and PPD status
- A copy of the student's resident's medical license
- Your educational institution may have to provide the IHS site with a completed background form and fingerprint card for the student/resident - generally 90 days prior to the student/resident start date
