IHS Announces $90.5 Million Contract Award for Completion of Norton Sound Regional Hospital in Alaska
The Indian Health Service (IHS) has awarded a $90.5 million contract for of the Norton Sound Regional Hospital in Nome, Alaska. The funds were provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The $90.5 million contract award was made to the Inuit-NCI, JV, which is a joint venture between Inuit Services, Inc., and Neeser Construction Inc., of Anchorage, Alaska.
“These Recovery Act funds will provide critical assistance to American Indian and Alaska Native communities,” said IHS Director Yvette Roubideaux. “These funds will help improve health care, create jobs and make our native communities stronger.”
The new Norton Sound facility replaces a 61-year-old hospital that is stretched to serve an estimated 10,000 users. The project will create a substantial number of new jobs in construction, transportation, and other professions and help fight unemployment in Nome.
This new 150,000 square-foot hospital is to be owned and operated by Norton Sound Health Corp. The contract is scheduled to start in 2009 and be completed in 2012. During the peak construction period, over 100 workers will be employed on site.
