The IHS Division of Health Professions Support (DHPS) is responsible for recruiting and retaining health professionals to serve within Indian health care facilities. DHPS advises and supports the IHS Director on policy, budget formulation and resource allocation regarding the operation and management of IHS, Tribal and Urban Indian (I/T/U) health programs. However, DHPS' overall recruitment strategy is to provide and administer scholarships, externships, loan repayment, grants and other career support services, as well as promote the services of its dedicated health care professionals and the American Indian and Alaska Native communities they serve. In addition to the IHS Loan Repayment Program, the IHS Scholarship Program and the IHS Extern Program, DHPS also offers the IHS Ambassador Program in which former and current Indian health program volunteers (primarily working in academia) help to identify and recruit health professionals who are a good match for Indian health programs.
