Summary:

There is an Area-wide HPDP Tobacco Prevention/Cessation activity to improve compliance with assessing tobacco use and exposure and use skills for counseling and supporting patients who decide to quit smoking. As a dental professional, you can play an essential role in helping your patients quit or think about quitting tobacco. By delivering an integrated stage based Five A Model brief intervention to a person dependent on tobacco, as a dental professional, you have the potential of increasing their likelihood of quitting by 60!

This workshop is offered to staff on how to use a Five A Model Intervention in your clinic. You will learn how to conduct low-intensity evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment interventions that do make a difference. With the knowledge and skills you will gain during the workshop, you will have the ability to encourage multiple tobacco cessation interventions to each tobacco user by simply being a role model in your clinical setting.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of the workshop, you will be able to intervene with all tobacco users, including patients who are not yet considering quitting, by understanding and practicing the skills to:

1. Screen and assess for tobacco use.
2. Conduct the Five A Model brief intervention for tobacco cessation.
3. Document intervention[s] for tobacco cessation.
4. Refer patients who use tobacco to intensive cessation services.
