Summary:

The purpose of this two day course is to provide IHS Dental Staff [dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and office staff] a better understanding of the challenges associated with providing oral health care to medically complex and cognitively impaired older adults. The course will focus on age-related and age-associated conditions. Easily adaptable strategies to address many of these concerns will be included in the program.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

1. Discuss age-related and age-associated physical and cognitive conditions commonly found in older adults.
2. Discuss the similarities and differences of old and young patients with health ailments.
3. Describe the aging of the population – its impact on todays’ dental practice and how this will change in the future.
4. Discuss the impact of age-related oral changes in older adults and the impact of this on the care of todays’ older adult population as well as those in the future.
5. Discuss the myths associated with aging.
6. Discuss the impact our perspectives have on how we provide oral health care.

Prerequisites:

One year experience in a dental practice that includes older adults.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
